Veronica Murphy currently serves as the Religion Curriculum and Resource Director for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. She has been a Catholic school leader and teacher in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for over thirty years. Veronica holds a Master’s in Theology as well as a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Dayton. Having led many pilgrimages herself to Italy and Ireland, she is very knowledgeable about the saints, Eucharistic miracles, councils, and history of Italy as well as other countries. While pilgrimages and traveling are one of Veronica’s passions, her favorite place in all the world is Assisi! Telling the story of St. Francis and St. Clare has always been a joy for her. In the spring of 2023, Veronica and her husband traveled the boot of Italy on their own pilgrimage to pray at the Eucharistic miracle sites south of Rome and of course made sure to visit Lanciano. Veronica enjoys playing a competitive game of euchre or hearts, taking hikes in the mountains, and talking about the faith! She is happy to be escorting you on the pilgrimage of a lifetime!

Upon arrival at the Rome International Airport (FCO), we will collect our luggage at baggage claim and continue to the arrivals hall to meet our pilgrimage guide. The Scavi tour culminates with the veneration of the bones of our first Pope, St. Peter. The Scavi tour concludes in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica, affording us the prime opportunity to “skip the line” and enter the main Basilica above. Spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring this magnificent basilica. We encourage you to spend time with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, venerate the tombs of Ss. John Paul II and John XXIII, marvel at Bernini’s Baldacchino, contemplate the divine with Michelangelo’s Pieta, and explore the countless other opportunities found in the basilica. We will gather in the evening for a festive welcome dinner (included), served with local wine. Overnight in Rome. (B, D)

After breakfast, we will board our motorcoach and depart for Assisi. On the way, we will stop in Lanciano for Mass at the Church of St. Longinus, the site of a Eucharistic Miracle that occurred in the eighth century. At the time of the miracle, there was a Basilian monk who struggled with his belief in the Real Presence in the Eucharist. At Mass, the monk, with doubt in his voice, said the words of consecration and the bread and wine transformed into physical flesh and blood. We will have the blessed opportunity to pray in front of the monstrance that houses this blessed Eucharistic miracle. Following lunch in Lanciano, we will make our way to Assisi to check into our hotel and enjoy an evening exploring the charming medieval streets of Assisi. Overnight and dinner on our own in Assisi. (B)
We will start the morning with a visit to the Basilica of St. Clare. While here, we will have time to pray at the foot of the San Damiano Crucifix, the very crucifix that God used to speak to Francis instructing him to “Rebuild My Church.” We will conclude our visit with prayer before the incorrupt body of St. Clare. Just around the corner, we will pray in front of the body of St. Carlo Acutis. Carlo was an English-born Italian youth and website designer, who is best known for documenting Eucharistic miracles around the world. We will conclude the morning with a visit to the vast upper and lower sections of the Basilica of St. Francis. While here, we will celebrate Mass and have the blessed opportunity to visit and pray at the tomb of St. Francis. Upon waking to the beauty of Assisi, we will have breakfast and check out of our hotel. We then make our way down the hill to visit and celebrate Mass at the breathtaking basilica of St. Mary of the Angels which houses St. Francis’ Portiuncula. It is here where St. Francis built his community and lived until his death. After our visit, we will take a scenic drive through the countryside to the small city of Orvieto, perched on a rock cliff in Umbria. Here, we will enjoy a memorable funicular ride to the top of the rock cliff formation where the historic city center is located. After a couple hours of free time for lunch and exploring the charming shops and street formations, we will gather in front of the Orvieto Duomo. Here we will meet our local guide and receive a guided tour of the famous Duomo of Orvieto, dating from 1290. Inside we will admire the rare frescos by Fra Angelico.
